Afrobeats star Tiwa Savage openly criticized the constant backlash she faces over her fashion choices, particularly due to her age.
Speaking on the Receipts podcast, the 44-year-old singer tackled the double standards she navigates as a Nigerian celebrity.
Tiwa Savage compared her experience to global stars like Beyoncé, also in her 40s, who receive admiration for their confidence and beauty.
“They age-shame me every single day,” Savage said.
“They say, ‘A woman of your age, how can you be wearing a bikini?’ I can because I have a body. Beyoncé is in her 40s and wears bikinis, but Americans don’t age-shame her. Instead, they celebrate her and say, ‘For her age, black don’t crack.’ It’s more celebrated when you look good in your older age.”
She also pushed back against critics who claim her son might judge her fashion choices negatively in the future.
Savage rejected this notion, confidently stating,
“My son is going to be like, ‘My mum is a powerful and beautiful woman.'”
Her statements have reignited discussions about ageism and societal expectations for women, especially those in the public eye.
Tiwa Savage’s defiance and determination to stay true to herself have drawn praise from fans and fellow celebrities alike, sparking conversations about celebrating women at every stage of life.
