In a gesture of regional solidarity and mutual respect, Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu extended his heartfelt congratulations to Ghana’s President-elect, John Dramani Mahama, following his victory in the December 7, 2024, general election.
President Tinubu, in a telephone call with Mahama, expressed his optimism that Mahama’s return to power would further stabilize the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), of which Tinubu is the current chairman.
He commended the people of Ghana for their unwavering commitment to democracy, as demonstrated through the peaceful and successful conduct of both the presidential and parliamentary elections.
Tinubu praised Ghanaians for showing the world that democracy remains the preferred path to achieving political stability, economic development, social justice, and transparent governance in Africa.
He affirmed that the belief in the principles of the people’s right to choose their leaders freely would continue to be a source of pride for Nigeria and the region.
The Nigerian leader also lauded Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the candidate of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the Vice-President of Ghana, for conceding defeat before the official announcement by Ghana’s Electoral Commission.
Tinubu noted that Bawumia’s stance reinforced Ghana’s democratic ethos.
Reflecting on Mahama’s previous tenure as President from 2012 to 2017, Tinubu highlighted the Ghanaian people’s trust in Mahama’s leadership and vision to elevate the country to greater heights.
He renewed his steadfast support for deepening the fraternal bonds between Nigeria and Ghana, underpinned by shared history, cultural ties, mutual support, and cooperation.
Tinubu also expressed his gratitude to outgoing President Nana Akufo-Addo for his exemplary leadership and numerous contributions to Ghana’s progress and regional peace and stability.
He looks forward to working with Mahama’s incoming administration to strengthen bilateral ties across various sectors and build a brighter future for the West African region.
