Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Tems (real name Temilade Openiyi) recently opened up about her early career in an interview with Glamour Magazine Germany.
The “Essence” singer admitted that she was very naive at the beginning of her journey in the music industry.
Tems shared that when she first started out, her primary focus was on creating good art. She didn’t fully understand the complexities of the music business and how to navigate it positively.
She said
“I don’t want to lie. I was very naive at the beginning of my career – I just wanted to make good art. I had to learn how to navigate the music business in a healthy way,”
The singer also credited her management and family for keeping her grounded during those early years.
“I would say that it is both my management and my family that keep me grounded. Especially my family, my mother and my brother,” Tems added.
Tems’ rise to fame has been meteoric, with her collaborations with global stars like Wizkid, Drake, and Justin Bieber propelling her to international recognition. Despite her success, she remains humble and acknowledges the learning curve she had to navigate to get to where she is today.
Reflecting on her journey, Tems emphasized the importance of staying true to oneself and learning from experiences.
Her story serves as an inspiration to many young artists who are just starting out in the industry.
