Nigerian gospel sensation Osinachi Kalu Okoro Egbu, popularly known as Sinach, is at the center of a N5 billion lawsuit over the copyright of her globally acclaimed hit song, ‘Way Maker’.
Michael Oluwole, known as Maya, filed the lawsuit, claiming co-authorship and co-ownership of the song. His allegations have sparked widespread debate in the gospel music industry and beyond.
Michael Oluwole Allegations Against Sinach
Maya, claims that they are the rightful co-creator or contributor to the song, which was released in 2015 and has since gained massive international recognition. He accuses Sinach of failing to credit or compensate him for his contributions to the song’s composition and production.
In his lawsuit, Maya demands:
- N5 billion in damages for alleged copyright infringement.
- Recognition and attribution for his claimed contributions to the song.
- An injunction to prevent the future distribution or performance of ‘Way Maker’ until the court resolves the matter.
Sinach’s Response
Sinach, through her counsel Emeka Etiaba, has denied Maya’s claims. She insists she solely authored ‘Way Maker’ and asserts that her global reputation as a gospel artist predates the song’s release.
Sinach argues that Maya only mixed the master recording, a task for which she paid him N150,000 ($300). She emphasizes that she composed, arranged, and performed the song with other artists long before involving Maya.
Legal Battle Ahead
The Federal High Court in Lagos held the first hearing for the case on November 27, 2024. The court adjourned the case until January 29 and 30, 2025, to allow both parties to present further evidence.
Maya seeks an equitable share of the revenue generated from licenses or assignments of copyright in ‘Way Maker’. He also requests a perpetual injunction to stop Sinach from reproducing, distributing, or publicly performing the song.
Sinach, standing firm in her position as the sole author, is prepared to defend her rights in court. The trial promises to test the boundaries of copyright laws and ownership in Nigeria’s music industry.
