House Democrats are circulating a petition asking for signatures urging the Democratic National Committee (DNC) to reconsider President Joe Biden’s hasty nomination process.
The letter asked that the DNC cancel its plan for a “virtual roll call” to officially nominate President Biden. The process, which begins as soon as Sunday, takes place weeks before the Democratic convention, which usually decides the actual nominees.
“It is a terrible idea to stifle debate and prematurely shut down any potential changes to the Democratic ticket through unnecessary and unprecedented ‘virtual roll calls’ in the coming days,” the letter says .”
According to NBC News sources, more than 20 representatives have signed the petition so far, including Reps. Jared Huffman (D-CA), Mike Levine (D-CA), and Susan Wilde (and D-PA).
Jared Huffman is one of the key figures leading the effort to gather signatures. A spokesperson for her office confirmed to CNBC that Huffman and other members are concerned about the rushed nomination process, believing it destroys interest and debate.
“Representative Huffman and other members are deeply troubled by this extraordinary effort to expedite enrolment, and do not believe that aggression is the path to happiness,” the spokesman said.
Those who signed the petition have different positions on Biden’s re-election bid. For example, Levine publicly called for Biden to withdraw from the race, while Wilde has yet to say anything publicly.
In May, the DNC decided to move forward with the virtual roll call route to celebrate the Aug. 11 election. 7 deadline to get the nominee on the ballot in Ohio, a state that has leaned heavily Republican in recent years although Ohio has since extended voting periods of the year though, until the end of August, the DNC chose to stick with its early registration policy.
