On December 18, 2024, a tragic stampede occurred at a children’s funfair at Islamic High School Bashorun in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Prophetess Naomi Silekunola Ogunswusi, the ex-wife of the Ooni of Ife, organized the event to celebrate her son’s birthday and distribute gifts to about 5,000 children. Unfortunately, the situation quickly spiraled out of control, leaving at least 35 minors dead and six others critically injured.
Eyewitnesses reported that the stampede occurred when children rushed to collect gifts. As participants tried to access the venue, chaos broke out. The number of attendees far exceeded the expected 5,000, with over 7,500 people showing up. This overcrowding created a dangerous situation in which several children were trampled.
In response, the Oyo State Police Command detained Prophetess Naomi Silekunola and six others connected to the incident. The police assured the public that a thorough investigation would determine the causes of the tragedy and hold those responsible accountable.
The stampede has sent shockwaves through the community and beyond. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar expressed heartbreak over the incident, mourning the children who only wanted to enjoy a fun day. He called for prayers for the affected families and urged authorities to ensure justice.
The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, also responded, calling for a comprehensive investigation to prevent similar incidents. He stressed the need for better organization and crowd control at public events to protect attendees.
As the community mourns the loss of young lives, questions about safety measures and the responsibility of event organizers are rising. This tragedy highlights the critical need for proper planning and management to prevent future occurrences.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims’ families. May the souls of the deceased rest in peace, and may the injured receive the care and support they need to recover.
